5 Used Sedan Features

The options seem endless when it comes to purchasing a used car, and many begin narrowing their search by asking: SUV or sedan?

Maybe you’re more comfortable driving a sedan, but you want some of the features often found in used SUVs. You may be surprised that you can actually find many of those features in a used sedan, while also enjoying some of the benefits sedans are known for. The best way to determine if a used sedan is the right choice for you or your family is to learn about what features you can expect.

All Wheel Drive

All-wheel drive (AWD) is important if you live in or visit areas with unpaved and uneven roads or deal with snowy or icy weather conditions. While it might seem that bigger vehicles like SUVs and trucks have better features to keep you safe and on the move in these conditions, some sedans offer AWD as opposed to the more common front-wheet drive (FWD), giving you more control in unpaved or cold weather conditions. Many of the most popular car companies, such as Subaru, Mazda, Ford, and Nissan, are increasingly offering AWD sedans to meet the growing demand for vehicles that combine the comfort of a sedan with the security of AWD. So, you’ll be able to enjoy the safety and power of AWD without sacrificing the benefits that make sedans popular.

Safety Features

Many people assume bigger cars are safer. While weight and size play a role in safety during accidents, sedans are rated one of the safest body styles on the road. Their lower center of gravity gives them a more stable body, which not only provides a smoother ride but also reduces their rollover rate compared to other body styles. In addition, sedans have all the safety features required by Federal Vehicle Motor Safety Standards, like airbags, seatbelts, seat anchors for car seats, and tire pressure monitors. Most sedans also come standard with additional systems in place to keep you save in an accident, such as anti-lock brakes and electronic stability.

Comfortable Seating

Comfortable seating is one of the best features of sedans. Most are designed to provide a comfortable and smooth ride for both the driver and passengers. They usually have well-padded seats with ample legroom and headroom. Some sedans also offer features like adjustable lumbar support, heated seats, and even massage functions for added comfort. Additionally, sedans often have a quieter cabin compared to other types of vehicles, thanks to sound insulation and noise-canceling technologies. While SUVs are generally larger, there are many sedan models that have extended body types to make for a roomy interior.

Fuel Efficiency

Of course fuel efficiency is one of the best benefits of sedans, which makes them a cost-effective choice for daily commuting and long drives. As of May 2022, the United States Energy Department reports that some sedans can get up to 31 miles per gallon of gas. Sedans can typically hold between 12 and 15 gallons of gas. This means you can expect to travel anywhere from 370 to 465 miles each time you fill your tank. If you elect to purchase a sedan, you’ll save money and time refueling. In comparison, a pickup truck only gets around 15 to 18 miles per gallon, making it a less optimal choice as a commuter vehicle.

Performance Option

Besides fuel efficiency, sedans are also known for being sportier than larger vehicle models. Sometimes you can find the best of both worlds in a comfortable sedan that’s also agile. In upgraded trims, you can also expect features such as turbocharged engines, sport-tuned suspensions, and paddle shifters for a more engaging driving experience.

So, when you’re shopping around for a used vehicle, remember that a used sedan includes all the beneficial features that make them so popular, and many also offer features such as AWD and safety packages that are typically associated with larger vehicle models, making them a smart and affordable choice.
